Tungareshwar is at an altitude of about 2177 feet, one of the highest mountain plateaus in Vasai. It is thickly wooded and offers many opportunities to trekkers, mountaineers and nature lovers. The best time to visit Tungareshwar is during the rains or the winter season. Space Apple organises camps for all age groups to this beautiful location from June to February. We have scheduled camps during the season for groups of 20 and also organise special customised camps for small groups of four to six persons in a Maruti Gypsy. For most trekkers the starting point is the highway junction, which is about a kilometer from the base. One has to walk along a broken, muddy road with shanties and auto repair shops on either side. The road is filthy, hence an alternative is to organise transportation to the base of Tungareshwar. At the base there is a forest check post. From this point onward starts the actual trek of Tungareshwar. After about a 3 km hike and walking through two streams, you reach the Lord Shiva temple. For a person with average fitness level, it takes about an hour to reach this point. This place is frequented by pilgrims and at times can be crowded so it is preferable to avoid weekends. For many picnickers this is the destination for enjoyment. A visit to the temple and a swim in the overflowing water pond is all they want out of this outing. For the real trekker to Tungareshwar this is the first halt. From this point there are two options: 1. A trek right up to the top that is 8 km long (2 hours for average person
one way) Both these treks are enjoyable and have their own charm. No amount of written words can describe this wonderful experience. Tungareshwar: The five to six foot wide muddy track leads the way to the top. The idea is to enjoy the journey. Avoid talking and making unnecessary noises and keep your senses on alert follow the path in a slow rhythm and enjoying the fresh air. Tungareshwar is rich in its flora and fauna. Warblers, red-vented bulbuls and crow-pheasants will keep company for some time. As you gain height, the singing of birds will subside giving you an opportunity to get lost in thought. You lose sight of the surrounding hills and visibility will be limited to a few feet as a healthy mix of rain, mist and wind blow into you. You will be passing through heavy clouds. Memories of these ecstatic moments, being caught alone in the natural order of things, will haunt you till next season, and then it would be time for an encore! The path opens on to the valley on both sides – giving you a beautiful view of the surrounding hills and villages below. You will experience heaven on earth. There are few spots to visit on top and your escort will guide you to the spots he has discovered over years of trekking on Tungareshwar. There is a temple of Sadanand Maharaj for those who wish to offer prayers. Chinchoti Falls: Chinchoti falls are generally visited by picnickers through Kaman village on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. Very few people know the jungle path through Tungareshwar. In fact there are two jungle routes meeting at different spots near Chinchoti waterfalls. The track is narrow jungle path and one can easily get lost without the help of escorts. The sound of the rains drops and orchestra of insects gives an eerie but adventurous feeling throughout this trek. You hear sound of watercourses trundling down rock faces chatting at a high frequency before it comes in your view. This is the midpoint of the trek to Chinchoti. From this point you will be crossing the stream on few occasions to reach the main waterfall. The journey is a thrilling experience and the waterfall is a beauty. The memories of the 125 feet magnificent waterfall will be permanently etched on your mind.
