Kites

Kite flying is great fun. The history of kites flying is quite interesting. Today kites come in many sizes and shapes. There are miniature kites for flying indoors as well as huge ones which need a team of people to fly them. Kite surfing is a very exciting sport and is gaining popularity in India.

We at Space Apple do design and make kites using various type of fabric - from simple single string parafoils to dual line stunt kites. These are generally made to order. Our team also conducts workshops on kites where we talk about various types of kites right from miniature flying kites to huge man carrying kites. Space Apple conducted a workshop on kites at IIT Powai in 2005 during the TECHFEST. Over 50 box kites were made during the workshop.

The International Kite Festival is held at Ahmedabad in India on January 14, to coincide with the festival of Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti. The people of Gujarat celebrate Uttarayan with a lot of enthusiasm. It is also a celebration to mark the end of winter.

Among the serious kite flyers Mr. Ashok Shah of Dahanu is one of the famous names in India. He has designed several kites and has also won several national awards for his kites and flying skills. He has a collection of kites from miniature kites to huge 10 to 15 feet floating houses and boats which are used for the shows he organises for schools and institutions..
