Space Apple is dedicated to teaching paragliding and paramotoring. Our training methods have evolved over a period of time to suit individuals with different pace of learning. The training site is within walkable distance from the clubhouse. We use a simulator with all controls to get a feel of being in the air. We conduct extensive theory and video session to help you get the fundamentals right. Students are trained by chief instructor on a one to one basis with proper briefs and debriefs and not by assistants. Maximum number of students in a batch is three to four. Our training site is not crowded so you do not have to wait because of air traffic.

This course is for those who have done some homework and decided to learn the sport.

The Basic course is the first step towards making your dream of flying come true. It is a great feeling to be up in the air, enjoy the freedom experienced by the birds and get a sense of achievement. We follow a training syllabus. Here's how the course works:

Ground School
You will start with the ground school. We allot you your individual flying kit for training. There will be short brief on the theory of flying. We will explain why things fly and how the glider is designed. This way you will know not only what to do but how it works and why. You will get a set of notes specifically written for this course that will help you review what you learn on the field.

Ground Handling
Ground handling is where you run with the glider on flat ground. You do this so that you can practice: inflating the glider, running with it, staying centered, making turns and slowing down. In short, practicing, all the basic elements of a flight before you even leave the ground. Becoming proficient in these fundamentals is the most important part of this course. When you find that you can consistently inflate the glider, run with it, steer smoothly and slow the glider down, you will be ready for your next level of getting lifted off your feet.

Confident is how you want to feel while leaving the ground and that’s where the instructor plays an important role. You'll be glad that you came to Space Apple for training as we do not train big groups but give individual training. You are trained to takeoff independently without assistance. You will begin with short hops from small heights and then graduate to proper solo hill flight. You'll have flight plan for each flight so you'll know what to do and your instructor will guide you on the radio as you fly. Depending on the weather conditions and the hill we use, your initial flights will be of two to five minutes duration. You'll get a number of flights to practice launching, steering, landing and just enjoying the sheer pleasure of being airborne!

Cost: Rs. 18,000/- Non residential. Residential course with additional charges.

How Long will it take?
This course is usually completed in three days. Weather may extend the course to a fourth day. Training schedule is 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening on the field. Afternoons are spent watching training videos and completing basic theory lessons.

What to wear?
Ankle support shoes are a good investment if you love outdoors adventure sports. An alternative would be your best pair of shoes for outdoor activity. Full sleeves T-shirt is a must along with denim trousers. Plenty of water and high energy fruits or chocolates will be useful. Get your camera along.

Where do we fly?
There are a number of hills we might use depending on the wind conditions. Most of these are within 10kms of our club house. Ground training field is about 1 km from the club house. We also have the option of winching or towing out on the plains or seashore.

What are other costs?
Generally people from Mumbai return back home in the evening and come back the next morning. So your traveling cost to Virar and what you spend on your own food is the only other expense. Traveling to the site is in Club vehicles.

What about safety and risks?
Paragliding is an adventure sport and like any other adventure sport has inherent risk associated with it. We have years of experience in training which helps us eliminate and reduce the risk. Our group size is small and the site is not congested with pilots. Being a coastal area winds too are more predictable. All these factors help us maintain a good safety record. We are equipped with first aid facilities and a stretcher. In any unfortunate incident good hospitals are within two kilometers from the site. We have standard procedures in place to deal with any kind of emergencies.

In P1 you learn the basics, enough to get you flying under supervision.

In P2 you learn all the skills necessary to fly without supervision and earn your Novice level certification.

This is a comprehensive course designed to make you a safe and competent pilot with good judgment. You also learn to reason out and understand when not to fly.

If you have to take paragliding as a regular sport you need to develop your practical and the theoretical skill level. This course will be divided in two sessions: ground handling and advance takeoff techniques.

Ground handling will be a four day course between 3 to 6pm and would cost you Rs.17,500/-. Advance takeoff techniques are taught at takeoff sites followed by soaring flights. The charges would be Rs.4375/- per session. Every flight you will be learning new things. The cost is more affordable and staggered at this stage.

The key to become a good paragliding pilot is to develop your ground handling or kiting skills. This is a never ending process but in this course we will put you on the right track for developing these skills. These skills will help you launching the glider using the most effective techniques, learn to control your glider smoothly without oscillation and spot landing your glider in a predetermined place. You’ll fly in varying conditions so that you’ll be familiar with the changing weather and be able to recognize appropriate and inappropriate conditions for flying.

We not only cover entire list of tasks required by the United States Hang Gliding Association to become a novice rated pilot but also go beyond the minimums to include additional flying skills and theoretical information.

In the theory classes we will cover: aerodynamics, glider control, weather, rules and regulations, critical situations and simulated reserve deployments. We will provide educational videos and share our resources to make your theory lesson more tangible.

We believe that only the most knowledgeable students can become the best and the safest pilots.

This is a proficiency based course and we believe in individual pace of learning. One can finish the course in ten days but we do not rush our students through this important step of paragliding training. You will proceed at the pace you are the most comfortable with and complete the course when you’ve fulfilled all the required tasks and pass the certification test. Your schedule and the weather conditions will have a lot to do with the time it will take to complete this course.

Where will we fly?

We will use a number of hills around Virar and may even travel far off location such as Kamshet or Panchgani. We will also do winching in the plains. Every year we plan a number of trips to flying sites outside our local flying area.

Do I have to buy a Glider?

If you really want to fly regularly then the short answer is yes. Typically a student starts on our training equipment but, one should get his gear early in the course to take the best advantage of your time under instruction. This way, we will be teaching you to fly the equipment you will be using in the long run. The training charges are also less if you have your own equipment. We will guide you in getting the right equipment and also pass on any discounts to you. Used gear is also available for those on a budget.

We are committed to our student and hope to have a long term relationship with all of our students. Any student who completes a novice course and purchases his own equipment is welcome to fly with the school. This way, although technically you are on your own, you’ll still have the resources of the school and your instructors to help you as you work on later ratings.

In India paragliding is not yet regulated by any body. We do not need any license to fly. This does not mean one can fly anywhere. One cannot fly in sensitive and restricted areas. You may be stopped by local clubs from flying their site if they feel you do not have adequate experience.

Certification course as the name suggests certifies you for flying at various sites independently. In this course, you are given certain tasks which you practice and logged in your certification book. The instructor will supervise and endorse these tasks in your book.

The requirement is completion of P1 and P2 courses and ownership of entire flying kit. As you can understand you will use your personal equipment for the task. You should have completed over 50 flights at various local sites before you join for this course. Apart from completing the tasks in the certification book you will also have to appear for a written and oral tests from the syllabus provided to you.

Charges: The charges are minimal and will depend on efforts and time and actual expenses incurred by the Chief instructor for overseeing the tasks being completed.
